In October this year, US experienced its deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. From his suite in the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, Stephen Paddock opened fire on an outdoor country music festival. He killed 58 people before taking his own life.
Gun violence also struck Sutherland Springs, Texas, where 26 adults and children were slaughtered inside the First Baptist Church. Police believe Devin Kelley was targeting his in-laws.
Now again, in another shocking case of gun violence in the US, Rihanna’s cousin died Tuesday after being shot in Barbados.
The singer posted a picture of herself with her cousin, who is believed to have been killed in a shooting in her native Barbados on Boxing Day, just a day after she spent Christmas with him.
A local news station idenfied her cousin as 21-year-old Tavon Kaiseen Alleyne and said that he was walking through a track in the St Michael’s area of the holiday island at around 7pm on Tuesday night when he was approached by a man and shot several times.
‘RIP cousin… can’t believe it was just last night that I held you in my arms!’ Rihanna wrote to her Instagram followers. ‘Never thought that would be the last time I felt the warmth in your body!!! Love you always man!’
Reports state that Rihanna made it a point to visit her extended family in Barbados and infact spent Christmas evening with her cousin before he was tragically shot .
Gun violence has claimed the lives of scores in the US and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 70,000 people are injured by guns each year.
According to the Daily Mail, Barbados Police has been a victim of increase in gun-related crimes in the recent past. Out of all the 28 murders committed so far this year, 22 were gun-related. Police have launched an investigation and are urging anyone with information on the incident to contact them.
Rihanna’s desperate plea for a tighter gun control law is the cry of thousands across the country.
