Even before the production of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat had begun, rumours were rife that a lot of actors rejected the role of Maharawal Ratan Singh because of small screen time and also because of apprehensions that the role will be overshadowed by that of Alauddin Khilji. Shah Rukh Khan was one of the actors who were approached for the role, which eventually went into Shahid Kapoor’s kitty.
Since the time the shooting of the film began, gossip mills were churning out stories on how both of them have been competing to get SLB’s attention and wanting more meaty role. Furthermore, it was said that both the actors shared icy cold vibes.
It all started with Ranveer Singh saying that he would have played Shahid Kapoor’s Kaminey role better. Recently, when Shahid was asked if he ever felt like playing Khilji, he said, “I will say, had I been there, I would have done it differently. I don’t want to get into the specifics of it but I think we are very different actors.”
Now speculations are rife that the two actors have become fierce rivals.
“Of course, Shahid would have played it differently. Every actor brings his own skills into every character. That is why you can’t compare Dilip Kumar’s Devdas with Shah Rukh Khan’s Devdas. But why talk about a co-actor’s role? Did Amitabh Bachchan speak about how he would’ve played Rajesh Khanna’s role in Namak Haraam? Even when two actors are fierce rivals, it’s an unwritten rule that two actors don’t discuss one another’s roles in the same film,” Deccan Chronicle quoted a source close to Padmaavat as saying.
The insider further revealed that Shahid had insecurities since the beginning.
“He had reservations about Ranveer playing the author-backed role, but Sanjay Leela Bhansali convinced him. But the twinge of doubt remained throughout the making of the film, and Shahid would anxiously look over his shoulder at Ranveer’s role.”
We don’t know how much of this gossip is true, but what we know is that Shahid and Ranveer were equally good in the roles they played in Padmaavat. And we cannot imagine anybody else playing Shahid’s Kaminey character or Ranveer’s Khilji for that matter.
