Here's Why Unmukt Chand's Century With A Broken Jaw Is Reminding Us Of Anil Kumble In 2002

The Under-19 boys have made India proud as they secured the World Cup for a record fourth time and got a rousing welcome in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, another U-19 World Cup-winning captain has been making headlines for all the good reasons. The Delhi boy Unmukt Chand, who is one of the four skippers to guide U-19 team to World Cup triumph, scored a brilliant century with a broken jaw for winning cause in ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy against Uttar Pradesh.

The bandage strapped around Chand’s chin reminded fans of legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who also played with a broken jaw in a Test match. Back in 2002 in Antigua Test, Jumbo while batting was hit by a delivery from Merv Dillon which broke his jaw. Despite that, the tall leg-spinner came out to play and bowled 14 overs and also took Brian Lara’s prized wicket. Chand’s latest antics rekindled those heroic moments for the fans.

Chand was injured in the nets just before the match against UP but managed to belt 12 boundaries and three sixes in his innings of 116 – which helped his side secure 55-run win. He was dropped from the Delhi squad in the semifinal and final of the Ranji Trophy after a poor run of form. After Chand was inducted in Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, he scored a half-century in the title clash – which eventually was won by Delhi.

Unmukt took things seriously,
played with a broken Jaw,
scored a century,
and did an Anil Kumble there.
what are the odds of his non-inclusion in international side going forward?

Put in to bat by UP, Delhi posted a mammoth 307 for 6 in stipulated 50 overs.Chasing 308, Uttar Pradesh were bowled out for 252 in 45.3 overs.

Just like Prithvi Shaw’s side beat Australia comprehensively to lift the coveted U-19 World Cup Trophy in 2018, Unmukt Chand-led side had also trounced Australia in the 2012 World Cup. India is now the only nation to win the ICC U19 World Cup four times.
